Keeping protection alive
A trademark registration lasts for a fixed term and can be renewed again and again, so a well-managed mark can be protected indefinitely. The renewal date is shown on the registration certificate. Missing it can mean losing the registration and having to file again, by which time someone else may have filed first.
Before you renew
- Check the owner details. If the company name or address has changed, or the mark was assigned, record the change so the renewal is in the right name.
- Review the goods and services. Renewal is a good moment to confirm the registration still matches the business and to plan new filings for new products.
- Confirm use. Marks that are not used can become vulnerable to cancellation. Keep evidence of use in Iran on file.
- Look at the logo. If your branding has changed significantly, consider filing the new version rather than relying on an old one.
Grace periods and late renewal
Many systems allow a short grace period after the renewal date, usually with an extra fee. Relying on it is risky: it adds cost and leaves no room for error if documents need correcting. We recommend starting renewal well before the due date.
Recordals that often go with renewal
Changes of name or address, assignments after a sale or restructuring, and licences to distributors or manufacturers can all be recorded against the registration. Recording them keeps the register accurate and makes enforcement simpler.
Portfolio reminders
For owners with several marks in Iran, we keep a calendar of renewal dates and send reminders well ahead of each deadline, together with a quote. You decide which marks to keep, and we handle the rest.
Taking over an existing portfolio
If your marks were filed by another representative, we can review their status, confirm upcoming deadlines and take over correspondence. A short review often uncovers marks that need attention, such as outdated owner details or registrations close to expiry.
To ask about a renewal, contact us with the registration number, or run a search if you are planning a new filing alongside it.
