Trademarks in Iran for foreign owners

What brand owners outside Iran need to know: representation, documents, Persian-script versions, bad-faith filings and distribution agreements.

Protecting an international brand in Iran

A trademark registered in Europe, the United States or elsewhere does not by itself protect the brand in Iran. Trademark rights are territorial, so brand owners who sell, manufacture or plan to license in Iran need protection there too, ideally before their products reach the market.

Representation and documents

Owners based outside Iran usually act through a locally qualified representative under a power of attorney. We act as that representative: we file, receive official correspondence, respond to objections and keep you informed in English.

Typical documents include a signed power of attorney, the owner's legal details and, in some cases, supporting documents about the company. Documents signed abroad may need legalising and translating into Persian. We tell you exactly what is needed for your filing before you sign anything.

Persian-script versions

Consumers in Iran may refer to a foreign brand by a Persian transliteration or a translated name. If that version becomes the way people know you, it is worth protecting as well. A comprehensive search can show whether someone has already filed a Persian version of your mark.

Well-known and bad-faith filings

International brands are sometimes filed in Iran by distributors, former partners or opportunists. Where a mark is well known, or was filed in bad faith, there may be grounds to oppose or cancel the filing. Early registration and a watch service remain the best protection. See our opposition guide.

Distribution and licensing

Before appointing a distributor or licensee, make sure the trademark is registered in your own name, not theirs. Agreements should state who owns the mark, how it may be used and what happens when the relationship ends. Recording a licence can make enforcement simpler.
